CanSat-Challenges

The CanSat-Challenges serve as an entry and orientation project for new members and people who are interested in KSat. It is aimed equally at first-year and advanced students who are interested in participating in a first project within the association. The aim is to get to know the process of larger projects with all their reviews, technical and organisational processes. This enables the participants to quickly integrate themselves into the club and to find out for themselves which areas they are most interested in.

Every year the organisational team of the challenge considers a new task with primary and secondary goals, milestones and evaluation criteria. The CanSat, a "mini satellite" with the external dimensions of a 330ml soda can, must be equipped with the appropriate hardware and software. Each team gets a fixed budget, which may be increased by external sponsors.

During the one- to two-semester project cycle, the teams must present the progress of their projects in various reviews to a jury of experienced club members and IRS experts. They give feedback on the design of the CanSats and evaluate the teams progress.

The participants receive assistance from the association in the form of seminars and are each assigned an experienced member to support them. The highlight of the challenge is the launch from a drone of the Institute of Flight Mechanics and Control (iFR) from an altitude of approximately 300m. After a final review of the results, the jury announces a winning team at the end of the cycle.
